Site Selection for Refining the Tools, Bill Thorpe

See the final choice of sites

  • If tools are going to be useful then they must be useful all around the world
  • ILRI aiming to serve smallholder needs in rural value chains with these tools
  • Examining the validity and effectiveness of the tools via dairy, beef and sheep meat value chains
  • Need to think clearly about ‘what defines a site?’
  • In order to be cost-effective data should be collected from samples that are representative of a larger domain (of hundreds of thousands of households)
  • Variables include agro-ecological zones, population density, smallholder production, and market access
  • Site boundaries – the costs are high so need to be think about large numbers of people
  • (a) what should the criteria be? (b) do 'Menz for sheep meat', 'Mojo for Beef' and 'Sululta for dairy' meet these criteria? (c) if so, define the scale of analysis, and if not then where is better and what are its boundaries?
  • Within the sites, how should we sample?

From the PPT

  • Why is this important?
  • Develop and test tools under the conditions in which they will be used
  • Ensure that tools are robust, i.e. applicable to diversity of value chains and production conditions
  • Ensure that tools will serve smallholder needs in rural value chains
  • Examples here: dairy, beef and sheep meat VCs
  • But which sites and which partners meet above needs?

Questions for group discussion

  • Which variables are important for defining sites: AEZ, pop density, smallholder production, market access, others?
  • Do “Menz for sheep meat”, “Mojo for beef”, and “Sululta for dairy” meet these criteria?
  • If so, define the scale of analysis. If not, where is better and what are its boundaries?
  • Within sites, should sampling be stratified, e.g., by market access and/or ……?

Results from the Groups

Sheep

1. Which variables are important?

  • Dependence on sheep
  • Populous
  • Wider distribution
  • Feed access
  • Market opportunity
  • Feed challenge
  • Brand!

2. Scale

  • VCA - Menz --> DB --> Addis
  • Techfit: DB, Menz, Shoa Robit
  • FEAST: DB, Menz, Shoa Robit

3. Menz

  • Yes!!

4. Stratification

  • Market access
  • Production system
  • DB / Menz / Shoa Robit ??

Beef

1. Variables to Consider

  • Market for input (animal, feed)
  • Market for output (fatten animal)

2. Area to be selected

  • The already selected area is not suitable for testing

3. Where?

(a) Sidama & Gedet

  • Why? Number of household & animals fattened

(b) Enemali - Filu

  • Why? Same as above

4. Yes, because distance from market center matters

Dairy

1.

  • AE2 -2GP (dairy masterplan (2005))
  • Market - population density - income - urbanisation
  • - milk / inputs
  • (def: smallholder ---> dominate in all areas)
  • - access to market / infrastructure
  • Feed [resource/availability]- by products / basal feed / land / credit

2.

  • Chancho
  • Selalea & Holetta = 1)2 = Ambo
  • Asella
  • Howassa

3.

  • test on secondary data followed by test primary data
  • sample size?
  • district (PA KA) - only milk producers

4.

  • Stratification - landless / landbased : dairy
  • Stratification based on resources + availability
  • local breed X bfeed
