|OUTPUTS||Approach and activities||Deliverable||Milestone date||Who?|
|# Refined tools for feed resource assessment, value chain analysis, rapid market appraisal and feed technology prioritization||1. (i) Field testing at three target sites (representative of major dairy, beef, sheep meat value chains and their domains*) of FEAST, Techfit and VCA tools and their refinement to improve their generic application in R4D contexts; (ii) The tools and their application will be reviewed and further refined during the Synthesis Workshop (5. below).||Synthesis reports on application of FEAST and Techfit tools.||Jun 15, 2012||AJD, AbTed, ATol, Getach, WT|
|2.1 Targeted value chain assessment of feed elements of dairy, beef and sheep value chains
2.2 Data base of price, quality and volume data on a seasonal basis for key feeds associated with the target value chains.
|2.1 (i) Application and refinement at the three sites of the VC methods and tools developed and tested in EADD, IPMS and related projects. Application to include indicative quantification of feed purchase/ exchange by users, and determining factors. (ii) In preparation for the field studies, the sites*, methods and tools will be reviewed during the Inception Workshop (Feb 21-22).
2.2 (i) Compilation of the relevant data from the field application of the FEAST, Techfit and VCA tools at the three sites and their value chains (2.1). (ii) Triangulation of the quality and volume data with available data sets.
|2.1 Draftsynthesis reports of each value chain assessment of feed resources
2.2Excel database of feed price, quality and volume information

|3 Synthesis of experiences with successful small ruminant feeding strategies from elsewhere and their local applicability||3. Desk study of available literature and project reports (including recent FAO e-consultation) and how recommendations could be modified for Ethiopia.||3. Short report||May 15, 2012||WT with AT, AJD, MB, ??|
|4 Assessment of feed availability and demand for small ruminant production in Menz area*||4. To complement 2.1 and 2.2 above and to contribute to 1 above, apply and refine tools developed at ILRI-Hyd to carry out an inventory of existing and potential feed resources and a balance sheet of available and required feed resources for specific production goals||4. Short report||May 15, 2012||Amare and EIAR/ARARI colleagues (with support from MB, AJD, ATol, AbTed?)|
|5 Synthesis workshop||5. Drawing on Outputs 2, 3 and 4, the tools and their application will be reviewed and further refined during a Synthesis Workshop to improve their application in wider contexts.||5. Meeting report||June 30, 2012||AJD, WT, KMIS staff.|
- T____arget dairy, beef, sheep meat value chains and their domains – provisionally the Sululta, Mojo and Menz target sites were selected as representing significant ongoing or emerging opportunities for the commercialization of milk, beef and sheep meat, respectively. At each of the target sites this commercialization is expected to significantly benefit the livelihoods of smallholder households and their market agents.
- The Inception Workshop will review the basis for selecting the target sites and their value chains and examine the larger domains they are said to represent. If necessary the provisionally selected sites will be replaced by others that are more representative of major development domains in which removing feed resource constraints to marketed beef, dairy and sheep meat production will improve significantly the livelihoods of smallholder households.
- During the application of the assessment tools at each of these target sites it is proposed that the data are collected at villages reflecting locations close, intermediate and distant from the principal consumption centre/market outlet of each site.
